What I Kept Carrying After It Was Paid

This message is for the one thing you have gone on carrying long after you were told it was settled, which you can name and have never once put down

He can tell you the exact thing, which is unusual, because most people carrying something like this cannot.

Aviel knows precisely what it is. He knows the year, the room, the two people involved, and what he did, and he has never once tried to make it smaller than it was.

He has done everything a person is meant to do about it.

He confessed it, properly and out loud, to somebody who was authorized to hear it. He made it right as far as it could be made right, which took eleven months and cost him something. He apologized to the person who was owed an apology, and that person, who is a better human being than he is, forgave him with a warmth that was almost unbearable.

That was nineteen years ago.

And he still carries it.

Not in the way people mean when they say they are haunted by something. He does not brood. He sleeps. It does not come up at three in the morning.

It sits somewhere further down and does a quieter job, which is to disqualify him from a certain amount of gladness. He is never quite unreservedly glad. There is always a small percentage held back, and the percentage is that thing, and it has been there for nineteen years.

He noticed the shape of it properly last winter at a table full of people, when somebody said something funny and he laughed, and in the middle of laughing there was a small pull, the way there is when you laugh and something in your side objects.

He knows the doctrine. Better than most people at that table.

He could set out for you, cleanly, why what he is doing is unnecessary, and he could quote you the verses, and he has taught them.

And he is still carrying it, and the two facts sit in him without ever having a conversation.

And you may have one. You may be able to name it as precisely as he can, and you may have done everything about it that a person can do, and you may still be paying a small percentage every time you laugh.

What I Kept Carrying After It Was Paid

The sentence has two words in it that close the matter

Take this off before we go a step further, because you have carried it for nineteen years and it was never yours to carry.

You are not still on the hook. You never were, after that day. Scripture puts two words in one sentence and between them there is nothing left for anybody to carry, and it is the Holy Spirit, not your understanding of the doctrine, who makes that land in a man. Set it down here at this table. It is heavy and it has been in your side every time you laughed.

Now hear the sentence, and hear both words.

For by one sacrifice He has made perfect forever those who are being made holy.Hebrews 10:14

One. And forever.

The whole letter has been building to that. The old arrangement had sacrifices that repeated, year after year, and the letter says plainly that the repetition itself was the evidence they were not finishing anything. A thing that keeps needing doing is a thing that has not been done.

And then: one sacrifice. Made perfect. Forever.

Those are not comfort words. They are legal ones, and they close the matter, and the closing is dated to something that happened long before you were born and a long way from the room you are thinking of.

You were included in that. Right now, at a table, nineteen years on. That stands written, and His Spirit is the one who makes it real in a person, and He has never once asked for a percentage.

Now let me be careful, because there is a ditch here.

Nothing here says what you did was small. It was not, and you have never pretended otherwise, and the eleven months of putting it right were the honest response of a serious man. Scripture does not make light of what was done and neither should anybody, and His Spirit did the convicting then and it was honest work.

And nothing here says the man who forgave you was being sentimental. He was not. He was doing something real and costly, and his warmth was not a failure of judgement.

The point is only that everything that could be finished has been, and you are the only party to it still keeping a balance. His word calls the matter closed and His Spirit is the one who applies it.

Here is the plain part, and I will say it as you would want it said. The carrying is not conviction and it never was.

Conviction has a purpose and it ends when the purpose is served, and yours was served nineteen years ago in eleven months of hard work. What you have been doing since is something else, and it looks like seriousness, which is exactly why a serious man never questions it.

But nothing is being paid down. Nothing is being served. His word says one sacrifice and forever, and His Spirit is the one who applies it, and neither of them ever set up an account for a man to keep contributing to out of his own gladness.

The breakthrough

So here is the turn, and it is the lightest thing in this message.

Nothing.

There is nothing here for you to do about it. You are not being asked to confess it again, or to reason yourself out of it, or to decide to be gladder from now on, which would only be one more thing you were paying with. His word said one and forever and His Spirit is the one who makes it live.

And I want to be plain, because you are a precise man and you are waiting for the second half. There is no final requirement on this page. If you read to the bottom of this and go back to the table and say nothing about any of it, you have received it exactly right.

By one sacrifice He has made you perfect forever. Right now, nineteen years on, in the middle of laughing. That is written, and His Spirit is the one who makes it live in you, and it was finished at somebody else's cost long before the room you are thinking of ever existed.

I am not going to tell you the small pull goes tonight, or in a year. That belongs to God and He does it in His own way and in His own timing, and I will not put a promise in His mouth so a page can close neatly. What I can tell you is what is already yours, and what is already yours is a matter closed by two words in one sentence.

Open your hands. Lift the glass to the same height as everybody else.

Declare this over yourself

Say these sitting at your own table with your hands open. Nothing here is a task and nothing here has to be earned; it is already yours in Christ, and it was settled before the room you are thinking of ever existed. Scripture is what these lines stand on, His Spirit is the one who makes them live, and the outcome is His, answered in His own way and in His own timing.

  1. Small percentage held back every time I laugh, you are not conviction and you have never once been paid to anybody. In the name of Jesus I put you down at this table, because this is news before it is a requirement, and it happened before anything was asked of me.
  2. Seriousness that has looked like humility for nineteen years, you are the only account still open in this matter and you are being closed tonight. Scripture says by one sacrifice He has made perfect forever, and one and forever are two words with nothing left between them.
  3. Lord, You finished it and Your Spirit is the one who makes it live in me, and everything that could be put right was put right nineteen years ago. My hands are open and there is nothing in them, and my glass is going up to the same height as everybody else's.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
