Marcia does nights on a ward where the lights never fully go down, and at ten past five in the morning the staff room is the warmest place in the building.
There were four of them in there. Somebody's birthday cake in a tin. That particular tiredness where everything is funny.
And Priya said, stirring her tea, Marcia, what actually happened to you? Because you were not like this two years ago.
She meant it kindly. She meant every word of it kindly. She had watched Marcia come through a stretch that would have flattened most people, and she had watched her come out the other side of it with something on her that was not there before, and she was asking honestly, at ten past five, with cake.
And Marcia had a word for it.
She had one word for it, and the word is the exact size of the thing, and it took her four seconds to not say it.
Because in those four seconds she saw a face. Not Priya's face. A different one, from a different conversation, months back, where the word had gone out of her mouth and something had closed behind the other person's eyes like a shutter coming down. She had watched them file her. She had watched a whole person she had worked beside for six years put her in a box in half a second and then be very polite to her ever after.
So Marcia said, I don't know. Time, I suppose. And a lot of praying.
Which is true. Which is entirely true. And which is nine words doing the job of one, and none of them naming the afternoon.
Because there was an afternoon. There was a specific Wednesday in October, in a hallway, on a plastic chair, when something came into her that she did not put there and has not been able to get out since, and she went into that hallway one woman and came out of it another one, and everything Priya was asking about is downstream of that hour.
She has the word for it. Everybody has the word for it. That is the trouble. Everybody has the word and almost nobody now hears it as an afternoon. They hear it as a type. They hear it as a set of opinions she has never expressed. They hear a whole crowd of people she has never met, and they hear all of that before she gets to the end of the sentence.
So she pays in nine words instead, and nine words never once carried anybody across a staff room.
And you know those four seconds, because you have your own, and you know exactly whose face you see in them.

He read it out as an announcement, over people, in a room
Now listen, because I want to hand you something before we go one step further.
You are not the doorkeeper of what that word does in a room. You never were and you were never asked to be. Scripture puts a word in your mouth about your own life and never appoints you the guardian of everybody's hearing, and it is the Holy Spirit, not your careful framing, who opens a person up to it. Set it down. It has been sitting on your chest in a staff room at five in the morning and it is not yours.
Now hear where the word actually starts.
Jesus stands up in His home town synagogue, takes the scroll, finds the place, and reads. And the words He reads out loud, in a room, to people who had known Him since He was small, are these.
The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because He has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sight for the blind, to set the oppressed free.Luke 4:18
Then He rolls it up, hands it back, sits down, and says it is happening today, in their hearing.
Now catch what that word proclaim is doing, because everything is in it.
It is not a description of a group. It is not a label anybody wears. It is a thing done out loud, over people, in a room. Somebody stands up and announces that a debt is settled, a door is open, a prisoner is out. That is the whole shape of it. Good news is not a category of person. It is a sentence somebody says over you.
And it was said over you. You are the one it was announced to, and it was announced while you were still in the hallway on the plastic chair with nothing to offer anybody. That stands written, and His Spirit is the one who carried it into you on a Wednesday in October, and no shutter coming down behind anybody's eyes has reversed a syllable of it.
Sit with that, because this is where the ache turns over.
You have been carrying the word as though it were a claim you make about yourself. Something you assert, and then have to hold up under scrutiny. But that is not what it is at all. It is testimony about what was announced over you, and His Spirit is the one who carried it in. You are not the announcer. You are the one who was announced to. You are the prisoner in the doorway, in daylight, blinking.
That is a different posture entirely, and it takes about ninety percent of the weight off.
You have this. Right now, reading this, on whatever chair you are sitting on. The announcement was made and it holds, because His word says the oppressed go free and His Spirit is the one doing the setting free, and a person who is out is out whether or not the room believes the account.
And I am telling you the truth in the other direction too, because I will not flatter you. Nine words are not braver than one. Nine words are a way of standing near the door without going through it, and you have been standing near the door a long time now, and it has cost you a great deal more than it has cost anybody at that table.
So here is the turn, and it is not a task and it is not a challenge.
There is one word. It is the true word. And you are going to say it out loud today, in a room where nobody can hear you, with nothing in front of it.
That is the entire ask, and there is not a second half coming. Nobody is sending you back to that staff room with an assignment this week. If you finish this page and go to bed and say nothing to anyone for a month, you have not failed anything and nothing has been withdrawn.
You are free. Present tense, right now, reading this, and it was announced over you in a hallway while you had nothing in your hands. That is written, and His Spirit is the one who made it true in you, and He did not do it provisionally.
I am not going to tell you what will happen when you say it out loud. That belongs to God and He moves in His own way and in His own hour, and I will not put a promise in His mouth to make this page land better. What I will tell you is what is already yours, and what is already yours is the word, at its own size, in your own mouth.
Say it. Once. Where nobody is.
Declare this over yourself
Say these standing, the way you would stand if somebody was reading your release out in a courtyard. Nothing here has to be earned and nothing here is a job; it is already yours in Christ, announced over you before you had one thing to offer. Scripture is the ground these lines stand on, His Spirit is the one who makes them live, and the outcome is His, answered in His own way and in His own timing.
- Shutter behind somebody's eyes, you were never a lock and you have never once held my gate shut. In the name of Jesus I leave you in that staff room, because the word you closed on means good news, and good news is what was announced over me.
- Four seconds of seeing the wrong face, you do not get to finish my sentences any more. Scripture says He was sent to proclaim freedom for the prisoners, and a woman who has been let out is out on the street in the daylight, whatever the street decides about the paper.
- Lord, You stood up in a room and read it out and then You said it was happening today, and Your Spirit is the one who brought that Wednesday into my hallway. The word for it is one word and it is mine, and I am saying it out loud where nobody is listening but You.
