Yusuf gets up before the house does, which is the only reason any of this happens at all.
Six o'clock, one lamp, the kettle, and a book open on the table with a cloth under it because the table is old.
And on Wednesday something happened that he has not been able to stop thinking about.
He was reading, not studying, just reading, and a line came up off the page at him. It was not a famous line. He could not have quoted it to you the day before. But it went into him the way cold water goes into you, and he stopped, and he put his hand flat on the page, and for about ninety seconds he was completely still.
Then he reached for the laptop.
He does not remember deciding to. His hand went out on its own. And he opened a search, and then another, and by the time the house started moving upstairs he had three tabs open and had read four different explanations of what the line meant, and two of them agreed with what had happened in him at six o'clock and one of them was about something else entirely and one of them made him feel slightly stupid.
And here is the part that has stayed with him. By seven, the thing was gone.
Not disproved. Nobody had disproved anything. It had simply been handled. It had been passed through four sets of hands and come back to him as information, and information does not do what happened to him at six.
He put the laptop away and sat there and thought, what did I just do?
He has done it for years. He can see it clearly now that he has caught it once. He has never in his adult life let a sentence from that book stay in him for a full day without going to find out whether he was allowed to have it.
And this is not because anybody told him not to trust himself. Nobody has ever said that to him. The men and women who have taught him have been generous and careful people and he owes them a great deal, and several of them would be genuinely upset to know he does this.
It is that somewhere along the line he decided that what happens to him at his own table is raw material, and that it only becomes real once somebody qualified has looked at it.
So he has a book he loves and cannot keep anything out of, because he hands everything in for marking before the ink is dry.
And I think you know that reflex, and yours may be a search, or a phone call, or a habit of waiting for Sunday. And you know the specific flatness afterwards, when the thing that came alive has been correctly filed.

The light was already in the page when it opened
Let me lift something off you first, because you have been carrying it into every morning and it was never yours.
You are not required to qualify before that book is allowed to speak to you. You never were. Scripture describes itself as giving light to the simple, which is the plainest word available for a person with no credentials at all, and it is the Holy Spirit, not a search result, who makes a sentence live in you. Put it down. It is heavy and it has been costing you your mornings.
Now hear how the book describes what happens when it opens.
The unfolding of your words gives light; it gives understanding to the simple.Psalm 119:130
Two things in one short line, and neither of them is what you assumed.
First, the unfolding gives light. Not the analysis. The unfolding. The act of the thing opening is itself the event, and the light is in the opening, not in the commentary that follows it.
Second, understanding is given to the simple. Not to the qualified. That word is not an insult and it is not a consolation prize either. It names exactly the person you were at six in the morning with a cloth under the book: somebody with no apparatus, reading.
You are that person and it is not a deficiency. You have been given the light, in the unfolding, at your own table, before anybody weighed in. That stands written, and His Spirit is the one who lit it, and He did not send it out on approval.
Now let me be careful here, because there is a ditch on this side of the road too, and I am not going to drive you into it.
The people who teach you are a gift. Study is a gift. The long faithful work of scholars who spend their lives on a language you will never learn is a real mercy and you are the beneficiary of it every time you open a page in your own tongue. Nothing in this message is against any of that, and a person who reads only alone and never listens to anybody will go wrong in ways they cannot see. That has always been true. Scripture honors the ones who teach, and His Spirit is generous through them.
The problem is not that you consult. The problem is when.
You consult before you have received. You hand the thing in while it is still warm, and what comes back is accurate and is not alive, and then you conclude that nothing much happened, when in fact something did happen and you posted it away ninety seconds later.
You have been given something at that table. Scripture says the unfolding gives light and understanding comes to the simple, and the same Spirit who breathed those words is the one who moved in you on Wednesday, and He was not waiting on four tabs to authorize it.
And the honest half, because it is the useful one. The tabs are not curiosity. Curiosity comes later and is a joy. What sends your hand out at ninety seconds is a small fear that you are not the kind of person this is allowed to happen to.
That is the thing being answered this morning.
So here is the turn, and it is small, and it costs you nothing.
Tomorrow morning, or tonight, open one page. Read it. And close the book with nothing else consulted.
That is the whole of it. You are not being asked to stop learning from anybody, and you are not being asked to trust yourself about anything difficult. You are being asked to let one sentence stay in you for one day before you hand it in.
You have the standing for that. It is not something you are working toward. His word says the unfolding gives light to the simple, and His Spirit is the one who does the unfolding, and both of those were true at your table on Wednesday at six o'clock in the morning while you were still sitting perfectly still with your hand on the page.
I am not going to tell you what will open when you read tomorrow, or whether it will feel like Wednesday. That belongs to God and He gives what He gives in His own way and in His own timing, and I will not promise you a feeling to make this page finish well. What I can tell you is what is already yours, and what is already yours is a book that was put into ordinary hands on purpose and speaks in them.
Read it. Then leave the laptop shut until the afternoon, and see what is still standing.
Declare this over yourself
Say these sitting at your own table, out loud, with the book closed under your hand. Nothing here is a task and nothing here has to be earned; it is already yours in Christ, and it was yours at six in the morning before anybody agreed with you. Scripture is what these lines stand on, His Spirit is the one who makes them live, and the outcome is His, answered in His own way and in His own timing.
- Ninety second reflex, you are not discernment and you have never once been discernment. In the name of Jesus I take my hand off the laptop, because this book was put into my hands on purpose and it speaks to me directly.
- Fear that I am not the kind of person this happens to, you do not get to send my hand out one more morning. Scripture says the unfolding of His words gives understanding to the simple, and simple is the name of the man at the table with a cloth under the book.
- Lord, the light was in the opening and Your Spirit is the one who struck it, and You did not send it out to me on approval. The page is mine to read, and I am reading one today and keeping what You give me in it.
