What The Word Meant2 Timothy 1:5

The Word I Could Not Hand Down

This message is for the word your grandmother put into your hands on a porch when you were nine, which you have never once put into your own son's hands

Kekoa was nine, and his grandmother was shelling something into a bowl, and she said it to him without turning around.

That is the whole of the memory. There was no occasion. Nobody had sat him down. He was on the step with a stick, doing nothing at all, and she said a sentence about her own life with one particular word in it, and then she went on shelling.

He is forty-one now and he could take you to the exact plank on that porch.

His son is fifteen and sits at the end of the same porch on a phone, and Kekoa has been trying to hand the word down for about four years, and it has not gone across.

Not because the boy is closed. The boy is fine. The boy is funny and kind and will still come out and mend a net with him without being asked twice.

It is that every single time Kekoa has gone near it, it has come out as a speech.

He has watched himself do it. He hears his own voice change gear. He gets a certain weight into it, and a certain slowness, and the word arrives at the end of a run up like a thing being presented, and his son goes politely still in the way teenagers do when an adult has become serious, and then it is over and nothing has been handed to anybody.

Four times, roughly. Maybe five.

And afterwards he has stood out by the rail and thought about his grandmother with the bowl in her lap, and he cannot work out what she did, because from the outside she did nothing. She did not build up to it. She did not turn round. She did not lower her voice or raise it.

She just used the word, in a sentence, about herself, on an ordinary afternoon, in front of a child who was not paying attention.

And it went in and stayed thirty-two years.

So the thing Kekoa is carrying is not exactly failure. It is stranger than that. He has more words than she had, more reading, more thought, and a much clearer idea of what he wants his son to have, and none of that has helped once. What she had was a bowl and an afternoon and a word she used about her own life without deciding to.

He has begun to be afraid that it stopped at his hands.

And you know that fear, and yours may be about a son or a daughter or a nephew, and it may be about a whole generation you can see the edge of.

The Word I Could Not Hand Down

What was handed down was never a performance

Take this off first, because you have been carrying it up and down that rail and it was never given to you to carry.

You are not the one who has to make it go in. You never were. Scripture gives you a word to say and never once makes you responsible for what it does inside another person, and it is the Holy Spirit, not the weight you put on your voice, who plants anything in a child. Set that down. It has been on you for four years and it is not your load.

Now, listen to how the handing down is described when it is actually described.

A man is writing to a young leader he loves, and he wants to name where the thing in him came from, and he does not describe a moment, or a talk, or a strategy. He names two women.

I am reminded of your sincere faith, which first lived in your grandmother Lois and in your mother Eunice and, I am persuaded, now lives in you also.2 Timothy 1:5

First lived in. That is the phrase. Not was successfully transferred by. It lived in one woman, and it lived in the next, and now it lives in him.

Nobody in that sentence performed anything. Two women simply had it, in a house, over years, and it went where it went.

And you have it. Right now, this minute, with a phone at the end of the porch and a boy who has gone politely still four times. That stands written, and His Spirit is the one who put it in you and keeps it living, and none of that is contingent on your delivery.

Here is the part I want you to hold, because it is where the ache turns over.

Your grandmother was not trying. That is the whole difference and it is not a technique, and I am not going to hand you just be natural about it, because that is another performance with better lighting.

What was actually going on is simpler. The word was in her ordinary speech because the thing was in her ordinary life. She used it about herself the way she would have used the name of the road she lived on. And a child on a step with a stick heard a woman speak about her own life without any pressure attached, and there was nothing in the room for him to resist.

Your five speeches gave him something to be polite about. Her one sentence gave him nothing to push against, and so it went in sideways and stayed.

You are not a failed link. Scripture describes faith that lived in a grandmother and then lived in a mother, and it never once describes either of them getting the handover right, and the same Spirit who kept it alive through both of them is not weaker at your end of the porch than He was at hers.

And I will say the honest thing, gently, because it is the thing that helps. The fear that it stopped at your hands is doing more damage than the four speeches did. It is what puts the weight in your voice. Your son is not resisting the word. He is bracing against how much it plainly costs you to say it, and boys can hear that from across a porch.

The breakthrough

So here is the turn, and it is smaller than four years of trying and much lighter.

There is a word, and it is true about your own life, and today you are going to say it out loud once, in a room where nobody can hear you. Not to your son. Not near your son.

That is the whole of it. There is no conversation to plan tonight, and if you never make a fifth attempt you have not failed anything, and nothing has been taken from your boy.

You have this. Right now, on the rail, before you feel one bit better about any of it. His word says that faith lived in a grandmother and lives now in the one who came after her, and His Spirit is the one who keeps it alive across a house and across a generation, and He does not need your voice to change gear to do it.

I am not going to tell you what happens with your son, or when, or how. That is God's, and He works in His own way and in His own timing, and I will not put a promise in His mouth to make this page end well. What I will tell you is what is already yours, and what is already yours is the word, at the weight your grandmother used it, which was the weight of an ordinary afternoon.

Say it the way she said it. Facing the other way, if that helps.

Declare this over yourself

Say these standing at the rail, out loud, in an ordinary voice. Nothing here is a task and nothing here has to be earned; it is already yours in Christ, and it was in your grandmother's mouth before you could spell it. Scripture is what these lines stand on, His Spirit is the one who makes them live, and the outcome is His, answered in His own way and in His own timing.

  1. Fear that it stopped at my hands, you are not the truth about this porch and you never were. In the name of Jesus I set you down at this rail, because the word you have been guarding means good news, and good news is what was put into my hands.
  2. Weight I put into my own voice, you do not get to make my son go politely still one more time. Scripture says that faith first lived in a grandmother and lives now in the one who came after her, and living is a thing it does rather than a thing I perform.
  3. Lord, she handed it to me sideways with a bowl in her lap and never once turned round, and Your Spirit is the one who kept it burning for thirty-two years. The word is ordinary and it is mine, and I am saying it out loud at this rail today.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
