The One Next Door1 Samuel 16:7

The File I Opened in 2019

This message is for the neighbor you decided was not interested, on the strength of one remark he made at a street party in 2019, and have quietly been right about ever since

It was a paper plate and a sentence, and Esther has been working from it for six years.

There was a street party. Somebody had put up bunting between the lamp posts and there was a table down the middle of the road and it was one of those afternoons that a street talks about afterwards.

And Marcus from number nine, who she had spoken to maybe four times, was standing near the trestle with a paper plate, and somebody else said something about the church at the top of the hill, and Marcus said, lightly, without any heat at all, yeah, that's not for me.

Then he ate a sausage roll and helped a child find her shoe.

That is the entire body of evidence.

And Esther, without ever making a decision, opened a file that afternoon and wrote not interested across the front of it, and she has been filing everything since under that heading.

She is not unkind about it. She takes his parcels in. She asked after his mother when his mother was ill. If you told her she had written him off she would be genuinely upset, because she has not written him off, she has simply established a fact and has been polite around it ever since.

The trouble is that the fact was one sentence, said in 2019, in the middle of a party, in a room of people, to somebody else.

Six years have gone over that sentence.

In those six years Marcus has lost his mother, had a hard stretch with his oldest, been off work for four months for a reason nobody on the street was told, and started running very early in the mornings, which Esther can see from her landing window at ten past six and has never mentioned.

She thought about all of that in April, standing at that window with a cup of tea, watching him go up the road in the half dark.

And a thought arrived, and it was not a comfortable one. I am working from a file I opened before any of this happened to him.

She has never once asked him anything. There has been nothing to ask, because the matter was settled at a trestle table with bunting overhead.

And you may have a file of your own. Yours may be older. Yours may be built out of even less: a bumper sticker, an overheard sentence, a thing they said about Christmas.

The File I Opened in 2019

Only one person in the story can read a heart, and it is not the neighbor

Take this off before anything else, because you have carried it for six years and it was never yours.

You are not the assessor of anybody's readiness. You never were. Scripture reserves the reading of hearts to God alone and hands you only the nearness, and it is the Holy Spirit, not your judgement about who is open, who does anything at all inside another person. Set the file down at the window. It is heavy and it has been keeping you at parcels and politeness.

Now hear the sentence, and hear who it is spoken to.

A prophet, a genuinely great one, is standing in front of a line of young men, and he is quite sure about the first one. Tall. Impressive. Obviously it. And God stops him.

The Lord does not look at the things people look at. People look at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.1 Samuel 16:7

Notice that the man being corrected is not a fool and is not careless. He is Samuel. He has heard God speak all his life and he has been right about enormous things.

And he still could not read a heart from the outside, and God tells him so plainly, in the middle of the job, before he does any damage with his own certainty.

You cannot read one either, and that is not an insult. It is a relief.

You have been carrying an assessment that was never yours to make and never in your power to make. That stands written, and His Spirit is the one who has been working in Marcus for six years while your file stayed shut, and nothing you concluded at a trestle table in 2019 has slowed Him down for a single morning.

Now let me be careful, because there is a ditch on both sides here.

Nobody is telling you to knock on his door and reopen the church conversation. That is not the ask on this page and it never has been. If somebody once handed you your street as a project and made your neighbors into names on a chart, that was wrong and you may set it down along with the file.

And that's not for me was a real sentence and he meant it in 2019. Respecting somebody's words is not cynicism. He was not lying to you.

The point is only that a sentence is not a soul, and six years is a long time.

Here is the tender part, and I want to say it kindly, because you are a kind woman and this is not a scolding. The file has been comfortable. Once somebody is filed, you never have to be uncertain around them again, and uncertainty is the expensive part of loving anybody.

You are able to be uncertain about him. Right now, this week, from the same landing window. Scripture says God alone looks at the heart, and His Spirit is the one at work in that house, and neither of them ever asked you to hold a verdict you were not equipped to reach.

And the honest half, gently. You have watched a man go up a road in the dark for two years and never once said good morning to him, and the file is why.

The breakthrough

So here is the turn, and it is small and it is not a conversation you have to plan.

Say good morning to Marcus, by name, when he comes back up the road.

That is the whole of it. Not the church. Not a follow up. Not an opening. His name, out loud, to his face, once, on an ordinary morning.

If he says two words and keeps running, you have done the whole thing. If it turns into a chat about his knees, you have done the whole thing. If nothing at all changes this year, you have done the whole thing, and nothing is being held against you and nobody is counting.

You are free of the file today, before anything about him changes. His word says the Lord looks at the heart, and His Spirit is the one who has been at work in that house all along, and neither has ever handed you the assessment as your own job.

I am not going to tell you what will come of a name said on a pavement. That belongs to God and He does it in His own way and in His own timing, and I will not invent a promise so this page can finish well. What I can tell you is what is already yours, and what is already yours is the nearness and the freedom from having to be right about him.

Open the window. Say his name.

Declare this over yourself

Say these standing at your own landing window, out loud. Nothing here is a task and nothing here has to be earned; it is already yours in Christ, and it was yours through all six years of the file. Scripture is what these lines stand on, His Spirit is the one who makes them live, and the outcome is His, answered in His own way and in His own timing.

  1. File I opened at a trestle table, you are one sentence long and you are six years old, and you are not evidence. In the name of Jesus I close you at this window, because the man in you has a name and I can tell the person next to me.
  2. Comfort of being certain about somebody, you have spared me every awkward morning and cost me every real one. Scripture says people look at the outward appearance and the Lord looks at the heart, and the heart was never on my side of the glass.
  3. Lord, You corrected a great prophet standing in front of a tall young man, and Your Spirit has been at work in that house for six years without my permission. The nearest one is mine to greet, and I am saying his name out loud tomorrow.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
