What The Word MeantLuke 19:9

Spelling It Out Before I Say It

This message is for the word you spell out in your head and check twice before you say it at the counter, in case it lands wrong on somebody who has already decided what it means

Dale runs the counter at the feed store on the county road, and he has known Wes since Wes was a boy putting his own money down for chicken grit.

Wes came in on a Tuesday looking rough. Not farm rough. The other kind. He stood there while Dale wrote up the ticket and then he said, out of nowhere, Dale, I don't know what I'm doing any more.

And Dale, who has thought about this exact moment for about nine years, said, well now.

That is what he said. Well now.

Then he said something about the weather, and he loaded the truck, and Wes drove off, and Dale stood in the yard with the ticket book in his hand feeling like a man who had watched a fish come right up to the boat.

Here is what happened in Dale's head in that half second, and he could draw it for you, because he has been doing it so long it has worn a groove.

He had a word ready. It is the word he would have used at any point up until about ten years ago without thinking about it once. It is a short, ordinary word, and it is the truest single word in his life, and it describes what happened to him at a kitchen table in his thirties when his marriage was coming apart and did not come apart.

And in that half second he spelled it out in his head. He looked at it the way you look at a board before you hand it to somebody, checking it for splinters. He thought about Wes's brother in law, who has opinions. He thought about a thing he saw on a screen. He thought about the face people make.

And then he put the board back on the pile and said well now instead.

He is not a coward. Dale has done hard things in front of people. He has stood at gravesides. He has told a man to his face that he was wrong and stayed friends with him after.

It is just that the word has gotten heavy. Not the thing. The word. He can still tell you the thing without any trouble at all, if he is allowed to use forty words instead of one. What he cannot do any more is use the one, because the one arrives now with a whole crowd of strangers standing behind it, and none of them are his people, and he cannot get them off it.

So he has been paying for it in forty words ever since. Which mostly means he does not say anything, because there is never room for forty words at a counter.

And I would guess you have your own version of that, and yours might not be at a feed store, and the half second is exactly as long.

Spelling It Out Before I Say It

It was one word about one house, said out loud in the street

Let me get one thing out of the road first, because you have been dragging it and it is not yours.

You are not responsible for what a word means to a stranger who has already decided. You never have been. Scripture gives you a word to say about your own life and never once makes you the referee of a public argument about it, and it is the Holy Spirit who carries a word into a man, not the polish you put on it beforehand. Set that down in the yard. It has been on your back for years and it does not belong to you.

Now. The word.

There was a short fellow up a tree once because he could not see over a crowd, and he was not a popular man, and everybody in that street had already decided what he was. Jesus stopped under the tree, called him down by name, and went to his house for supper, which caused a good deal of talk.

And when it was done, Jesus said one sentence in the doorway. Not a lecture. One sentence.

Today salvation has come to this house. For the Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost.Luke 19:9

Look at the size of that. Today. This house.

Not a movement. Not a party. Not a position on anything. A day and an address.

That is the natural size of the word, and it is the size it stays at when it is doing its actual job. It is a word about what happened at a particular table, to a particular man, on a particular afternoon.

And you have it. Not one day. Now. Salvation has come to your house and it came on a day you could name if somebody asked you kindly, and that is written, not felt, and His Spirit is the one who signed it. Nothing that has happened to the word in the years since has reached into your house and undone the day.

Here is the part I want to sit on, because it is where the tiredness actually lives.

You have been treating that word like a flag. Something you run up a pole where everybody can see it, and then have to defend on the pole. But it was never a flag. It is a receipt. Scripture calls the work finished and His Spirit is the one who put the paper in your hand. It is the plain word for a transaction that was completed, by somebody else, at his own cost, for you.

A man does not defend a receipt. He just has it.

You are not being asked to argue. You have never been asked to argue. Scripture says the Son of Man came to seek and to save, which means the seeking was His idea and the finding was His work, and the same Spirit who found you at whatever table you were sitting at is the one who does the finding in everybody else too. Your job was never the crowd. Your job was the one man at the counter.

And I will say the plain thing, because you would say it to me. Forty words at a counter is no words. You know that. There is not time and you both know there is not time, so the forty words are a polite way of saying nothing, and you have been saying nothing for a while now, and it has cost you more than it has cost anybody who was listening.

The word is not heavy. The word is short. The crowd behind it is heavy, and the crowd is not yours to carry.

The breakthrough

So here is where we get to, and it is not a program and it is not a challenge.

There is one word, and it is yours, and you are going to say it out loud today in a room where nobody can hear you.

That is all. Nothing is going to be asked of you at the counter this week. You are not being sent out to do anything. This is not a warm up for an assignment, and if you read to the bottom of this and go and feed the dogs and say nothing to anybody for a month, you have not failed one thing.

You are saved. Right now, in that chair, and it was settled a long way from here at somebody else's cost, and His word says salvation came to the house and His Spirit is the one who brought it. That is not a claim you have to hold up. It is a fact you get to stand on.

And I am not going to tell you what happens after you say it. That is God's business and He conducts it His own way and I will not put a promise in His mouth. What I will tell you is what is already true, and what is already true is that the word fits, and it always did, and the years of weather never once got inside the house.

Say the word. Once. Out loud. Nothing in front of it.

Declare this over yourself

Say these standing up, out where the air is. Nothing here has to be earned and nothing here is a job; it is already yours in Christ, and it was settled at the table before the weather ever started. Scripture is what these lines rest on, His Spirit is the one who makes them live, and the outcome is His, answered in His own way and in His own timing.

  1. Crowd behind the word, you were never my crowd and I am not carrying you to the counter one more day. In the name of Jesus I set you down in this yard, because the word you got attached to means good news, and good news is the whole of what I am holding.
  2. Half second of checking, you do not get to write my sentences for me any more. Scripture says salvation came to that house today, a day and an address and nothing bigger, and a receipt is a thing a man has rather than a flag he has to hold up a pole.
  3. Lord, You came to seek and to save and You did both, and Your Spirit is the one who did it at my table when nobody was looking. The word for it is short and it is mine, and I am saying it out loud in this empty place today.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
