Forty Years On One ThingIsaiah 1:17

Seven Years Since I Said It Out Loud

This message is for the wrong you named out loud once, at a table, seven years ago, and have never mentioned again in any room since

There were eleven people at that table and Yonatan can still name nine of them.

It was a good evening. It had been a good evening for two hours. And somewhere after the plates were cleared the conversation went past a thing that he had been carrying for years, and he said it.

Not a speech. Four or five sentences, plainly, without heat, about a wrong that he had been reading about and thinking about and could not get out of his head.

And the table did that thing.

Nobody was rude. One man asked a question that was clearly designed to move the subject along, and somebody else laughed at something not very funny, and within about forty seconds they were talking about a road that had been closed, and it stayed closed for the rest of the evening.

He drove home fine. He was not devastated. He remembers thinking, well, that was not the moment.

That was seven years ago and he has never said it in a room again.

Not once. Not at a table, not in a small group, not to the two friends he tells everything to. He still reads about it. He still cares about it in a way that has not diminished at all, and if anything it has got heavier because it has had seven years of nowhere to go.

But something got decided in him that evening that he did not decide consciously, and the decision was: the room does not want this, and I am not the man to make it want it.

He has dressed it up since in reasonable clothes. He tells himself he does not want to be the person who brings that up. He tells himself the timing has never been right. He tells himself, sometimes, that talking about it is not the same as doing anything about it, which is true and is not the reason.

In the winter he was at another table, and the subject came near again, close enough that he could feel it, and he watched himself steer round it, and he watched himself do it smoothly, with the ease of a man who has been steering round the same thing for seven years.

And he went home and sat in the car outside his house and said, out loud, seven years.

And you may know that table. Yours may have gone worse than his, or better. But there is something you said once, and something you concluded from the way a room received it, and you have been living off that conclusion ever since.

Seven Years Since I Said It Out Loud

The instruction is to learn it, which means nobody starts good at it

Take this off before we go on, because you have carried it for seven years and it was never yours.

You are not disqualified by one flat evening. You never were. Scripture puts this whole business in the language of learning rather than of natural aptitude, and it is the Holy Spirit, not the temperature of a room, who sustains a person in a long concern. Set that down here at the table. It is heavy and it has been steering you for seven years.

Now hear the sentence, and notice the first word.

Learn to do right; seek justice. Defend the oppressed.Isaiah 1:17

Learn.

That is a remarkable word to find at the front of that line, because it concedes something enormous. Nobody is born able to do this. It is a competence, acquired the way competences are acquired, which is badly at first and then less badly.

Which means a flat evening at a table is not evidence that you are the wrong person. It is what learning looks like on a Tuesday. Every person who has ever become any good at saying a hard true thing in a room began by saying it clumsily, at the wrong moment, to people who changed the subject.

You are able to keep learning. Right now, seven years in, with the habit of steering fully formed. That stands written, and His Spirit is the one who teaches a person over years, and He has never once closed the class after one bad night.

Now here is the part I want to place carefully, because it is where it turns.

There were people who worked forty years on one wrong, and their early attempts were mostly failures. Motions that got no support. Meetings where three people came. Speeches that were badly received and then reprinted years later as though they had always been admired.

The thing that made the difference was not that they were persuasive at the start. Several of them were not. It was that they treated a bad reception as information about a room rather than as information about themselves, and they came back.

And crucially, most of what they did was not saying things in rooms at all. It was the ordinary work: the reading, the letters, the records, the small unglamorous jobs. Speaking was a small part of it and it was never the entry requirement.

Scripture says learn to do right and puts the whole thing in the language of practice, and His Spirit is the one who does the teaching, and neither of them ever made a single flat evening the end of it.

And I will say the honest half, because you are a man who prefers things said plainly. Seven years of steering has not protected anybody, and it has not made you wiser about timing. It has made you fluent at avoidance, and fluency is just practice, and you have been practicing the wrong skill.

The breakthrough

So here is the turn, and it is not about speaking at a table.

Do one small piece of the actual work this week.

That is the whole of it. Not a conversation. Not a moment at a dinner. Not an announcement. One small piece of the ordinary work of the long thing you carry, sized so a tired man could repeat it next week without any resolve at all.

Name the long thing out loud first, once, on your own, so it stops living entirely in your head.

And if a room ever comes, the room comes. It is not this week's assignment and nobody is checking.

You are able for this today. Not one day when you are better at rooms. Now, seven years in, with the steering habit intact. His word says learn to do right, which is a sentence written to beginners, and His Spirit is the one who does the teaching, and neither of them ever asked you to have been good at it in the first place.

I am not going to tell you what any of it will come to or whether a room will ever receive it well. That belongs to God and He works in His own way and in His own timing, and I will not put a promise in His mouth to finish a page. What I can tell you is what is already yours, and what is already yours is a class you have not been thrown out of.

Do the small thing. The table is not the work.

Declare this over yourself

Say these out loud, sitting in your own car or standing in your own room. Nothing here is a task and nothing here has to be earned; it is already yours in Christ, and it was yours on the drive home from that table. Scripture is what these lines stand on, His Spirit is the one who makes them live, and the outcome is His, answered in His own way and in His own timing.

  1. Forty seconds at a table seven years ago, you were one flat evening and you have never been a verdict on me. In the name of Jesus I set you down in this car, because the work is mostly not talking anyway, and I can stay with this after the feeling goes.
  2. Fluency I have built at steering round my own subject, you are practice at the wrong skill and you are not driving this any more. Scripture says learn to do right, and learn is a word that concedes nobody starts good at it.
  3. Lord, You put it in the language of learning and Your Spirit is the one who does the teaching, and You never closed the class after one bad night. The ordinary work is mine to do, and I am doing one small piece of it this week.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
