Opened For Ordinary PeopleActs 2:8

In My Own Accent

This message is for the way you flatten your own voice the moment you read it out loud, as though the words only count properly in somebody else's accent

Denise heard it on a recording and could not get past it.

Somebody had filmed a bit of the Tuesday group on a phone, for the woman who was ill and wanted to see everybody, and Denise is in it for about forty seconds reading four verses out loud.

And the voice coming out of her is not hers.

It is a slower voice. It is flatter. It has had every corner taken off it. All the music that is in her voice when she is telling a story at that same table, all the rise and drop of it, all the places where her mother is in her mouth, gone, and in its place is a careful, level, borrowed sound that she has apparently been using for public reading since she was about nineteen.

She watched it four times.

And what she felt was not embarrassment, exactly. It was the same feeling as hearing a piano being played with the lid down.

She has thought about it a great deal since, because she is not a woman who hides. She talks for a living. She is the one at the school who can get a room of parents laughing in about a minute.

But something happens the second the book is open.

She thinks it started at nineteen, in a place where the readings were done by people who all sounded like each other, and she was new and did not want to be conspicuous, and so she borrowed the sound. And it worked, and she got told she read beautifully, and she has read that way for twenty-three years.

The strange part is that she does not do it when she is alone. On her own in the kitchen, when she reads a psalm out to nobody, it comes out in her own accent, with all the music, and she reads it like she is telling somebody something.

Two voices for one book, and the one she uses in public is the one that sounds like nobody.

And the thing under it, which she has only recently let herself think, is this. Somewhere she has been carrying an idea that the words are foreign to her mouth. That they are visiting. That they land properly in a different accent from the one she was born with, and hers has to be smoothed out first to receive them.

And you may know that adjustment. That half second where you change gear before you read. And you may never have asked where the voice you switch into actually came from.

In My Own Accent

The first crowd heard it in the accent they were born in

Take this off first, because you have carried it since you were nineteen and it was never yours.

You are not a guest in your own mouth. You never were. Scripture goes out of its way to record God speaking to people in the language and accent of the place they came from, and it is the Holy Spirit, not the smoothness of a public reading voice, who carries the words into anybody. Set that down, sister. It is heavy and it has kept a good voice under a lid.

Now hear the morning it began, because God made a very deliberate choice that day and everybody in the crowd noticed it.

A group of ordinary people start speaking, and a crowd gathers from everywhere, and the thing that stops them in their tracks is not volume and it is not spectacle. It is the accent.

Then how is it that each of us hears them in our native language?Acts 2:8

Each of us. Our native language.

It could have been done another way. A single formal tongue for everybody would have been simpler and would have looked more impressive. Instead, on the day the Spirit came, the deliberate design was that a man from one province and a man from another would each hear it in the words their own mothers used.

That is not decoration. That is God saying, at the very start, that these words are not foreign to any mouth.

You are one of the mouths. Right now, at your own table, with the music your mother put in your voice still in it. That is written, and His Spirit is the one who did it that way on purpose, and He has never once needed a reading voice from anybody.

Now let me be careful, because there is a ditch here too.

Reading well out loud is a real skill and a kindness to a room, and slowing down so people can follow is not pretense. The people who taught you to read clearly did you a favor. And the person who reads only alone, in their own voice, hearing nobody else and taking correction from no one, ends up with a small world and a strong opinion. Stay in the room. Keep the group.

The problem is not clarity. It is subtraction.

What you took off at nineteen was not sloppiness. It was the part of your voice that carries conviction, and that is why the recording sounded like a lid was down. You did not learn to read clearly. You learned to read anonymously, and the two are not the same thing.

You are able to read it in your own accent. Now, not one day. Scripture says every man heard it in his native language and the same Spirit who arranged that is the one in you at that Tuesday table, and He was not hoping you would smooth yourself out first.

And I will say the honest half, warmly. The version of you that reads in the kitchen alone is the better reader. You have known it for a while.

The breakthrough

So here is the turn, and it is small and it costs you nothing.

Today, read one page out loud in your own voice. The one you use at the school gate. The one your mother is in.

That is the whole of it. You do not have to do it in the Tuesday group next week. Nobody has to hear it. If you never change one thing in public you have not failed anything and nothing has been withdrawn from you.

You have this now, before you feel any braver. His word records God going to the trouble of being heard in every native tongue on the first day, and His Spirit is the one who did that, and neither has ever asked you to sound like anybody else.

I am not going to tell you what will happen when you read it that way, or how it will feel. That belongs to God and He gives what He gives in His own way and in His own timing, and I am not going to manufacture a promise to close a page. What I can tell you is what is already yours, and what is already yours is your own voice, which was never on loan.

Lift the lid.

Declare this over yourself

Say these out loud in your own accent, standing, in your own kitchen. Nothing here is a task and nothing here has to be earned; it is already yours in Christ, and it was yours through all twenty-three years of the borrowed voice. Scripture is what these lines stand on, His Spirit is the one who makes them live, and the outcome is His, answered in His own way and in His own timing.

  1. Borrowed voice, you were a nineteen year old's way of not being conspicuous, and you have had the lid down on a good piano for twenty-three years. In the name of Jesus I hand you back, because this book was put into my hands on purpose and it speaks to me directly.
  2. Idea that the words are foreign to my mouth, you have made me flatten the one thing that carried conviction, and you are finished doing it. Scripture says each of them heard it in their own native language, and God chose that on purpose on the first morning.
  3. Lord, You could have used one formal tongue and You did not, and Your Spirit is the one who saw to it that every man heard it in his mother's words. My accent is not a thing to be smoothed out, and I am reading a page out loud in it today.

Why we ask you to say these out loud

The word this stands on
