Priya can win that conversation. She has won it maybe forty times.
Somebody at a table says the thing about how it was all written centuries later and changed by hand and cobbled together by a committee, and Priya, who is twenty-six and reads properly and does not enjoy conflict at all, says a few very calm sentences, and the table goes quiet in the particular way a table goes quiet when somebody knows what they are talking about.
It is not showing off. She hates showing off. She does it because she watched somebody she loved get talked out of everything at nineteen by an argument that was not even a good one, and she decided she would never be that unequipped.
So she read. For years. And she is good.
And on Thursday, in a student kitchen at eleven at night, she did it again, and it went well, and afterwards she was making tea at the counter with her back to everyone, and a thought arrived that she has not been able to put down since.
When did it last say anything to me?
Not about it. Not for it. To her.
She stood there with the spoon in her hand and tried to find the date, and this is what she came up with. There was a morning in March, on a train, going somewhere she did not want to go. She read a bit out of a Gospel on her phone and something in it went into her and she sat there with her eyes stinging and the fields going past.
March.
It is now well into the autumn. And in between there have been, at a rough count, forty conversations and a great deal of reading, and no meals.
She knows the shape of the problem immediately, because she is not slow. The book has moved. It used to be food and it is now ammunition, and she did not decide that at any point, and she cannot remember a single day when it changed over.
The worst part is that the ammunition works. That is what makes it so hard to see. If it had failed her she would have gone looking for something else. Instead it has served her beautifully in every single conversation and quietly stopped serving her at all in the mornings.
And you may know this. Perhaps your version is not arguments. Perhaps it is preparation, or a group you lead, or a habit of reading with somebody else's need in mind. Any of those will do it. The page starts being a place you go for something to use, and then you cannot remember the last time you went there simply hungry.

He answered the enemy with a sentence about bread
Take this off before anything else, because you have been carrying it for months and it was never yours to carry.
You are not the one who has to hold the whole case up. You never were. Scripture is handed to you as food before it is ever handed to you as an argument, and it is the Holy Spirit, not the strength of your reading, who feeds a person out of a page. Set it down at the counter. It is heavy and it has quietly cost you your mornings.
Now hear what Jesus reaches for in the worst possible moment, because the moment matters.
He has been forty days without food. He is being pressed by an enemy who knows exactly where the weak point is. And when He answers, He does not answer with a case. He answers with a sentence about eating.
It is written: Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.Matthew 4:4
Live on. That is a food verb.
He is not saying the words are reliable, though they are. He is not saying they can be defended, though they can. He is saying they are what a person lives on, the way a body lives on bread, daily, unremarkably, without applause.
You are meant to live on this. Right now, in an ordinary autumn, in a kitchen at eleven at night with a spoon in your hand. That stands written, and His Spirit is the one who feeds you out of it, and He does not require you to be doing anything clever with it at the time.
Now let me be careful, because there is a real ditch on this side.
Your reading is not wasted and it is not vanity. Somebody at nineteen was talked out of everything by a bad argument and it hurt you, and going and getting equipped was a good and loving response. Scripture never once sets study against eating, and His Spirit works happily through both. The people who write those books and the ones who teach you are a gift. A person who cannot say anything when their friend is knocked sideways is not more spiritual, they are just quieter, and you were right not to want that.
Keep every bit of it.
The problem is not that you have ammunition. It is that the shelf where the food used to be is now entirely full of ammunition, and both come out of the same book, and nobody warned you that the second can crowd out the first without ever contradicting it.
You are able to come to it hungry. Not one day when the conversations stop. Tonight, on the same phone you argued from on Thursday. Scripture says a person lives on every word that comes from the mouth of God, and the same Spirit who fed you on that train in March is the one who has been waiting all autumn, and nothing in you has been disqualified by forty good conversations.
And I will say the honest half, because it is the one that helps. Winning has not fed you once. Not once in forty. You know exactly how you feel walking home from those conversations, and it is not the way you felt on that train.
So here is the turn, and it is small and there is nothing to prepare.
Tonight, open one page and read it hungry. Not for a conversation. Not for anybody. Not with a single thought about what it could be used for.
Then close it and do not look anything up.
That is the whole of it. Nobody is asking you to stop reading, stop learning, or stay quiet at a table. Argue well on Thursday. This is not instead of that. It is one page tonight with nothing on the other end of it.
You have this. Right now, before the tiredness lifts, before anything changes. His word says you live on every word that comes from His mouth, and His Spirit is the one who does the feeding, and neither of them has ever once required you to be useful while you read.
I am not going to tell you what it will say, or promise you March again. That belongs to God and He gives it in His own way and in His own timing, and I will not manufacture something to make this page land well. What I will tell you is what is already yours, and what is already yours is bread and not only ammunition.
Sit down. Eat something.
Declare this over yourself
Say these out loud, sitting down, with the book shut. Nothing here is a task and nothing here has to be earned; it is already yours in Christ, and it has been yours through every month since March. Scripture is what these lines stand on, His Spirit is the one who makes them live, and the outcome is His, answered in His own way and in His own timing.
- Ammunition, you are a good thing in a hard conversation and you have never once been a meal. In the name of Jesus I put you down at this counter, because this book was put into my hands on purpose and it speaks to me directly.
- Tiredness that sleep has not touched since the spring, you are not a mystery and you are not my character, you are hunger. Scripture says a person lives on every word that comes from the mouth of God, and living on a thing is done sitting down.
- Lord, You answered the enemy with a sentence about bread when You had not eaten for forty days, and Your Spirit is the one who feeds me out of the page. It is food before it is anything else, and I am eating tonight with nobody on the other end of it.
