Grace, and Then the However

He has been doing it so long he does not know when he started.

Somebody says the word and something in Wendell gets ready. Not defensive. Ready, the way you get ready when you are told the doctor will see you in a minute.

Because in his experience the word grace is the first half of a sentence.

It goes like this. Grace, and then. Grace, however. Grace, but of course that does not mean. He has heard it a thousand times and he could tell you the pause that comes before the turn, and he has learned to spend the pause bracing rather than resting, because the resting only costs you more when the second half lands.

He is sixty-eight.

He is not bitter and he does not blame anybody. Every one of those preachers meant well and most of them were guarding against something real, and Wendell is not a man who thinks doctrine does not matter.

It is simply that a thing which arrives a thousand times with a second half attached stops being able to arrive on its own, and now, when he reads it in his own kitchen with nobody talking, he still waits.

He caught himself in February. He was reading, at the table, alone, and he came to the word and he felt himself get ready.

There was nobody there. No pause coming. No however.

And he sat with his finger on the page and thought, quite clearly, I have not been able to hear that word for about thirty years.

Not disbelieve it. Hear it. He believes every bit of the doctrine and could set it out for you properly. He just cannot get it to land as news, because the whole apparatus in him is built to wait for the qualification.

And you may know that brace. You may be able to feel yourself doing it while somebody is still speaking, and you may have never once heard the word arrive on its own and stop.

Read it to the end of the sentence and then stop

Let me get one thing out of the road first, because you have carried it thirty years and it is not yours.

You are not owed a qualification. You never were. Scripture puts this one down in a sentence that finishes where it finishes, and it is the Holy Spirit, not your readiness for the second half, who lands it in a man. Set it down here on the tailgate. It is heavy and it has been riding with you since February.

Now hear it, and hear where it ends, because His Spirit had it written to end there.

For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith, and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God, not by works, so that no one can boast.Ephesians 2:8

Read that again and notice that every clause after the first one is doing the same job.

Not from yourselves. It is the gift of God. Not by works. So that no one can boast.

That is four consecutive attempts to close the same door. Paul is not building toward a however. He is going round the house locking every window a however could get in through.

There is no second half of that sentence. He wrote it that way on purpose, and he wrote it to people who would have supplied one themselves if he had left room.

You have been saved by grace, through faith, as a gift, and it is not from you. Right now, at sixty-eight, sitting in a kitchen with your finger on a page. That stands written, and His Spirit is the one who made it so, and He did not attach a rider.

Now let me be careful, because there is a ditch here and I am not putting you in it.

Nothing here says the men who preached those qualifications were wrong to care. Most of them were guarding real ground, and there is a way of talking about grace that turns into nothing at all, and they had seen it and they did not want it for you.

And nothing here says what a man does with his life afterwards does not matter. It does. The chapter goes on to say so a couple of verses later, and it says it as a description of what God prepared rather than as a bill.

The point is only the order, and where the sentence ends, and thirty years of bracing has moved the whole thing in you.

Here is the plain part. You have never once let the word finish, and His Spirit has been waiting at the end of it.

Not because you doubt it. Because the finishing has never been safe, and a man does not relax into a sentence that has hurt him a thousand times, however true the first half was.

Scripture stops where it stops, and His Spirit is the one who makes the stopping bearable, and neither of them ever asked you to hold on for the qualification.
